There have been some changes to my favourite train ticketing website after National Express lost their franchise on the East Coast Main Line.
The next time you use the booking site (now simply East Coast), you will notice free postage is no longer offered. Instead, you can either arrange to pick up your tickets for free from the station or you can opt to have the tickets posted by Special Delivery for an extra £5. This is a bit of a swizz, because Special Delivery would not cost you that much from the post office, so customers are being gouged. NEWSFLASH - when making a booking today (19 December), I noticed First Class post is being offered free again!
I recommend booking your trains on this site because there are no booking fees. Seat reservations and paying by card remain free too. Currently they are offering a 10% on certain journeys along the East Coast Main Line when booking advance tickets online. It is easy to find the cheapest tickets on any particular day, all you do is choose your price range to filter out expensive journeys.
They also offer email alerts for any date you may have in mind for travelling and despite the name, you can use East Coast to book tickets for any train in the country.
