Thanks for the message Sid. Athens is quite the eye-opener! Compared to other European cities it is dirty and chaotic, but I never felt unsafe.

The Tempi hotel is a few steps off one of the city's main shopping streets and has several cafes, a church and flower market for neighbours so it's fairly civilised. There is no through traffic on the street out front.

It's some distance away from the demos. One of the city's finest 5-star hotels, the Grande Bretagne, overlooks the square where most of the rioting has been taking place.

Thanks for your post. I am going to Greece for the very first time and am thinking of staying at the Tempi later this summer and would like to ask you about the feel of the immediate neighborhood at night.

I am going with my teenaged son and want to be sure it's safe, and not too noisy, or thuggy, at night.

I hope you'll continue checking back as I finish my Madrid entries over the next week or two.

Although I will be focusing on the usual highlights like the major art galleries, there are plenty of places like Parque del Retiro, the La Solea flamenco bar and La Latina neighbourhood where you will rubbing elbows with locals and not the tourists.

The Texas Roadhouse sounds like it was a kick in the pants. I like that kind of easy going just throw the shells on the floor attitude. An easy way to make it memorable and unique and they didn't have to pile on the old junk all over the walls like some of the food chains around where I live. Hope the rest of your trip gets back on schedule.

Aahh, Bistecca all Fiorentina! Born in Cape Town, South Africa I miss the red meat (being the carnivore that I am) but every now and then I treat myself to a great big steak in Florence - it's the only meat in Italy (or Europe) that I've found remotely compares to the meat back in SA.
Yup, Florence is my favourite Italian city, not for the renaissance art, beautiful wine farms, Chiant wine, Tuscan landscapes, vibrant culture or exciting history....
Nope, the red meat!
