For nearly two thousand years, this bridge has crossed the Tiber River in Rome. It earned a new name, Ponte Sant'Angelo (the bridge of angels) after the sculptor Bernini designed a group of angels to watch over the pilgrims passing below.

For all their gracefulness, the angels bear in their arms the 'instruments of the Passion' such as nails, whips, the column to which Jesus was tied before being flogged and the cross upon which He was crucified.
